FIRST VISIT FAQ

Whether you’re ready to try indoor climbing or you’ve been doing it forever and visiting us for the first time, there are some things you need to know to make your first visit the best it can be. Follow this easy guide and we’ll get you climbing in no time.

What to Expect

You will learn how to put on a harness, tie into the safety rope and how to belay (operate the safety device) your partner. You will climb lots to practice your new skills and choose climbs which are both challenging and attainable. You will have fun and meet interesting people.

What to Wear

We recommend that first-time climbers wear comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement. Regular gym clothing: shorts or tights, t-shirt. Shorts are fine, but no “short-shorts” (the climbing harness will feel very uncomfortable) or blue jeans (it’s hard to move). During cooler weather a sweatshirt layer may be useful during the lesson. Kids and adults can easily climb in a pair of comfortable tennis shoes. However, we do have specialized climbing shoes for rent that offer more secure footing on the wall. Please bring thin socks to wear in our rental climbing shoes.

Waiver

Every guest must have a waiver. Whether you’re climbing or just hanging out, we need a current waiver on file for you. If you are under 18 years of age, you MUST have a parent or legal guardian sign the waiver. Waivers stay active in our system for 2 years before needing to be renewed. Save time and fill it out online by clicking the button below.

Climbing Types

We offer different types of climbing for the same low price, but each one requires different sets of equipment, knowledge and experience.

BOULDERING

Climbing on short walls without ropes and harnesses. Instead you are protected by thick mats underneath you. Climbers under 14 years old must be supervised by an adult.

TOP ROPE

Climbing tall walls with the security of a rope and harness. Top roping requires a properly trained and tested belayer to work the ropes on the ground. Climbers 13 and older can be trained. Niagara Climbing Center does not provide belayers.

AUTO BELAY

An automatic belay device (AKA auto belay) takes up slack as you climb, thereby negating the need for a belayer on the ground. When the climber reaches the top, or if they fall, the device automatically catches the climber and slowly lowers them to the ground.

Climbing Benefits

The benefits of climbing are multi-faceted. Whether you are looking for a program for a corporate or school environment the lessons and rewards are rich and last a lifetime.

Rock climbing is an exciting alternative to traditional parties and events. It’s also a great way to celebrate a birthday. It’s interactive, so in addition to being fun, it can be a team building event for your office and climbing is a great way to bring people together.
